Abstract : With the cutting-edge technology, teaching of foreign languages has started to be shaped in a diff erent aspect: Computers, personal digital assistants (henceforth PDAs), mobile phones and the like have entered the educational area. The reason behind this change is that there are approximately 1.5 billion people using mobile phones and a half billion people using personal computer (henceforth PC) around the world. Under this circumstance, both researchers and educators are in the pursuit of utilizing technology within the educational framework. As a natural result, computer-assisted learning and mobile-assisted learning have come to scene. This paper aims to find the eff ect of mobile assisted language learning, SMS (Short Message Service) sending system, over students’ success and attitude towards English language learning. In this regard, preparatory classes are chosen as the study group: Totally 36 students studying at Civil Aviation department at a state university in Turkey have attended in the study. 15 vocabularies within aviation subjects, unknown by the students, have been chosen as target vocabularies.

During three weeks, SMS including these target vocabularies have been sent to students’ mobile phones. Students have gotten SMS during week days and from 9:00 am to 6.00 pm. Each message includes three target vocabularies (their explanations in English and a sample sentence) and each message has been sent more than once. At the end of the application procedure, a post-test has been applied to determine the students’ success level: The results have justified the eff icacy of mobile-assisted learning; the students have gotten higher points (M= 63,05 , SD= 19,50; t= 19,05, p<0.05). As a last phase of the study, a questionnaire has been applied to define the attitude of the study group towards mobile assisted learning: They show great tendency towards it and they are much more motivated when taught via their mobile phones because of the fact that they spend most of their time by calling, texting, searching, working or studying with their mobile phones. In addition, according to the study results, students use commonly online dictionaries both inside and outside the class.

Definitely, all of these factors trigger the use of technology while teaching. Briefl y, this paper shows that the students have learnt the target vocabularies in an eff ective and enjoyable way via mobile phones, they are much more motivated via mobile technology and they want to go on this kind of study for next academic year. Under this circumstance, the study’s results support the author’s assumptions: Mobile learning helps learners to improve their missing skill and to save their free time. In addition, mobile assisted learning triggers learners’ motivation and increases confidence in terms of independent learning.
