Abstract :

In the last few years we are facing the trend of decreasing interest of students in mathematics and science. The number of students who are continuing onto college education in professions of STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) is constantly declining. Many adults have unpleasant memories of learning mathematics in secondary education and in practice they avoid using mathematical reasoning although it can be very useful. Today, according to professors who teach mathematics at our faculties, students show poor understanding of mathematical problems.

The traditional approach to mathematics content, teaching and assessment will not respond to the challenge of preparing students for the demands of a changing world. This implies the need for a new approach to the study of mathematics in secondary education where the use of ICT in the teaching process can play a key role.

 In recent times, in many places, dynamic geometric software has been integrated into the teaching of geometry. Much less has been done in this field with algebra particularly with respect to making the ideas of algebra come alive by connecting the algebra itself with dynamic visual and tabular representation.

The main idea of this paper is to show a practical, classroom use of dynamic technology in the teaching of abstract algebraic ideas. The algebraic concept of inverse functions will be integrated with the free dynamic software GeoGebra. The initial purpose is to help the student (and teacher) understand the diff erent properties of inverse functions using multiple representations of the inputted function and its inverse. It enables real-time visualization of the interaction function – inverse function in such a way that geometric and algebraic relationship with the coordinates of points is clear. The work is then directed towards solving a few mathematical problems using the applet. The constructions will be placed on Wikispaces wiki service with the step-by-step construction protocol for the applet together with explanations of problem solutions. In this way, users can either use the applet online directly and/or create it themselves from home or school. Thus, the learning of the curriculum is not limited only at school and teacher lecture. Students can individually explore, test and learn.

Throughout this paper, we show a new approach to looking at functions and their inverses. Practical, classroom use of dynamic technology in the teaching of abstract algebraic ideas gives deeper understanding of curriculum content. Mathematical software GeoGebra gives freedom of constructing, exploring, testing and learning. Visual representation of real world problems with functions provides an understanding of the connection of the world that surrounds us with mathematics and makes mathematical concepts more understandable.
