Abstract :

The purpose of the present paper is to present the challenges faced by adults when trying to overcome the obstacles of learning a new language: to cope with the progress of technology related to the new and modern ways in which language learning resources are made available for learning a new language, to adapt to the new teaching and innovating methods based on qualitative curricula; on the other hand we refer to the opportunities off ered for adults on an academic level which allows them to quickly and professionally acquire competences for a new language, in a common eff ort for contributing to lifelong learning, for developing competences able to support chances for a sustainable development and to off er especially the adults who are in danger of being excluded by the society the possibility to integrate in a society based on knowledge and thus to find easier more and better jobs all over Europe.

 There are an ever changing and constantly evolving methods and applications involved in ICT when adult learners facing the challenge of learning a foreign language for diff erent purposes have to consider and keep up with. Romanian has been part of several projects which deal with lifelong learning programs, some of them referring to learning a foreign language for technical or vocational purposes, addressing mainly to adults, and thus off ering them a source of competitive advantage for the key competences achievement in educational contexts as well as on the labor market. There have been created Centers of Excellence where teachers have been trained to deliver special courses for teaching foreign languages, especially for adults who are willing to benefit from the modern pedagogical approaches and the newest teaching techniques available for this purpose. These Centers abide by the new European trends, where trainers, that is teachers, train other trainers how to respond the educational challenge for an ageing population, off ering them a variety of teaching methods, materials and resources, combined in an ICT approach for delivering modern and interesting courses for adults in order to improve their knowledge and gain competences in acquiring a new language. At the same time the Centers promote lifelong learning programs, through specially adapted courses dedicated to the needs and different categories of adults: socially under –privileged groups, low – levels of education groups, adults having difficulties in learning, as well as adults who are not so easily motivated to learn, especially a new language in a new technological approach.

 Alongside with the acquirement of a new and useful language, the adults will also form basic competences, ICT competences, as part of their social inclusion. Since informational and communication technology is becoming more and more important for the social as well as political progress, internet based learning materials, on-line resources and electronic platforms represent the basis of language teaching courses, as they promote interactive and e-learning; the curricula is adapted in such a way as to respond the active ways of getting
an intercultural knowledge through interaction between more adult learners, through practicing online the new language; the curricula also takes into account another reasons that are essential for adults who besides the lack of motivation, lack of trust in their own forces, the aging factor, other social and familial responsibilities, time and such find it more diff icult to begin such a learning program, to attend language classes
