Abstract :

The integration of technological innovations into educational settings is a controversial issue for both teachers and students. The Ministry of National Education in Turkey aims to integrate technological tools into instructional system in FATIH project. Four main technological components of the project are learning object repository, Tablet PC use, e-book integration, and Interactive whiteboard integration. It is significant to investigate the use of those components in the previous studies. In order to clarify the advantages, disadvantages and recommendation for the use of those components following research question are going to be examined: What does the literature put forward about FATIH project’s components: learning object repository, Tablet PC, e-books, Interactive Whiteboard? Literature was reviewed in terms of those components.

The study is expected to reveal the advantages, disadvantages and the essential points of those components. Previous studies revealed that there are some key points for the components in terms of students and teachers’ perception, technological and pedagogical advantages and disadvantages. When the components are examines one by one some critical points for each component was revealed. Success and use of learning object repository heavily depends on age range taught and whether they taught in primary or secondary schools, whether the teachers had core or high ICT skills, the amount of use the teachers made of ICT, the length of time they had been teaching, gender, perceptions of teachers and students, and ICT knowledge of the teachers. As a novel technology there was not much study about new generation, so studies based on a similar technology windows based tablet PCs were also investigated. Advantages of Tablet PCs are as follows: digital distribution of lecture notes, increase the amount of time spent on lecture as opposed to copying material, having a more natural interaction type, provide opportunity to teach abstract concepts, handwriting, have potential to be used for electronic grading etc. Disadvantages of tablet PCs extracted from previous studies are need of digital resources, need of ICT knowledge, losing attention of the students, set up time could be too long. As a recommendation tablets should include a detachable keyboard and a stylus pen to let students to take note faster.

Advantages of e-books are found as follows: search engine, available 24 hours from the off ice or home, never lost or damaged, easy to update, store and share, no printing cost, can provide an interactive medium, tablet PCs, Notebook PCs can carry thousands of e-books, embedded dictionary. And the disadvantages are: could require special environment or hardware, easier to copy and distribute illegally, hardware use could require technological training, printed materials are still easier to read. As other components success of interactive whiteboards heavily depends on ICT knowledge of teachers, presence of digital resources, perceptions of teachers and students. The components of FATIH Project could complete each other if it can be implemented successfully. Such as, need of digital resources for tablet PCs and interactive whiteboards can be supplemented by the LO repository. Tablet PCs are the best environment to read e-books. Those key points should be taken into consideration for a successful technological integration in to schools.
