Abstract :

Development of technology has increased rapidly in the recent years, and aff ected our life in all dimensions with being no exception in education. Nowadays, web and mobile technologies improve, as well. These improvements are used in education in order to design, develop and utilize eff ective educational tools, and to bring a new perspective to the education field. By using these educational applications, activities, strategies, pedagogical frameworks, and tools, learners can be active, engage with the content, learn eff ectively and eff iciently, and form new cognitive skills. In the light of these technological development and perspectives, e-learning concept has emerged, and aff ected the education field. E-learning provides synchronous and asynchronous access and learning, so new developments, models, and theories are formed in order to use e-learning, and provide learners with eff ective learning environments.

One of field that also emerged from e-learning is mobile learning. Mobile learning provides learners with accessing the educational content anytime and anywhere via mobile devices. Basic elements of the complete mobile learning consist of learner, teacher, environment, content and assessment. Basically, the core characteristics of mobile learning might be listed as ubiquitous, portable size of mobile tools, collaborative, blended, private and instant information. These characteristics might provide opportunities for learners to experience authentic learning environments in the right place and at the right time. The aim of this study is to search, organize, and classify the literature on mobile learning, and present the current trends and issues in m-learning. This literature review includes articles selected from Web of Science database based on specific keywords.

These keywords are “m-learning” and “mobile learning”. A rigorous database search was held to look for these keywords in the “title” fields of the articles in the last five years. This literature review covers 287 articles from diff erent journals and conference proceedings based on the results returned. In this study, the literature is reviewed systematically with a meta-analysis approach, in this way providing a more comprehensive analysis and synthesis of 287 articles from 2008 to 2011. After the search, the results returned were analyzed, and then 7 of them were eliminated due to inappropriate article content. As a result, a framework was formed based on emerged categories. Therefore, the trends and issues regarding m-learning are written as a result of this study. Results on m-learning might also provide future research directions for researchers in this field.
