Abstract :

Design and development of an eff ective e-learning system in a programmer’s manner is as important as the design of instructional material for the study of instructional technology. There are various techniques and algorithms used in the development of an online course while programming the web site project to improve learning process especially in analytical subjects such as mathematics. Therefore the programmer of the e-learning system needs to be aware of the learning side of the topic or needs consultation. The subject is interesting since there are new technologies that are being introduced every day. Unfortunately there are not as much studies done for the computer programmer’s point of view, who is creating the software design. One of these methods, genetic algorithm method has been proven to lead to a more optimized version of an online course to improve interaction with the student and hence improve learning.

The genetic algorithm method is used in various types of desktop and web site applications. In order to reach more students we have developed our e-learning system as a Web-based learning system. The aim of this study is to investigate and clarify the effects of using genetic algorithms in the development of e-learning systems such as online courses, instructional web sites, etc. while delivering the instructional content via the Internet. Online courses are very important for analytical courses such as mathematics where students have a hard time learning the subject. According to our face-to-face interviews with teachers we have concluded that one of the hardest mathematics topics for the primary school students is the topic of quotients where they have a hard time understanding the matter. For this reason we have developed an e-learning system for an introduction on the topic of quotients.

In the e-learning system we have developed we have used the genetic algorithm to improve the interaction with the student who is studying on our web site. We have given the definitions for quotients and other instructional material in a manner where students can clearly understand without getting bored. We have improved the interactions and we have added many activities for evaluation of the student’s learning. The analysis is done with the help of the latest Microsoft .NET technology, compatible with any computer with Windows operating system. The application concerning the genetic algorithm has been developed by using Visual Studio .NET tools. A system based on the genetic algorithm has been constructed and the results are discussed.
