Abstract :

Nowadays, there are several studies about the integration and use of technology in education. These studies show that today‘s students are using information and communication technologies eff ectively in their personal lives. Also, those students perceive web-based tools such as YouTube, Blogs, Wikipedia and Social Networks as an integral part of their daily life. Similarly, as a powerful teaching and learning tool, digital storytelling has gained importance for teachers and students. Digital storytelling is the process of creating a short video between 2 and 10 minutes from a text or an original story combined with a variety of multimedia such as picture, video, music or narration. The literature regarding to digital storytelling shows that it develops students‘ 21st century skills, increases motivation and participation in the class, develops their creativity, provides a useful discussion in the classroom, helps students explain themselves, and increases their self-confidence (Banaszewski, 2005; Howell & Howell, 2003; Hull & Nelson, 2003; Jakes & Brennan, 2005; Robin, 2008).

In addition, participating actively in the process of the digital storytelling develops students’ information literacy, visual literacy and communication skills (Jakes & Brennan, 2005; Robin, 2008). The related literature emphasizes the eff ectiveness of this approach on students. Studies indicate that digital stories are usually created with computer software such as Windows Moviemaker, Windows Photo Story or iMovie. Therefore, the technological skills of teachers and students are important. Digital storytelling applications may seem to be diff icult for teachers and students who do not have those skills. With the spread of Web 2.0 technologies, teachers and students show greater interest in interactive educational practices on the web. In order to discover the full potential of this pedagogical and technological approach, the aim of this study is to introduce a web based digital storytelling system as a new concept “e-Storytelling”. Before the development of this system, international studies and web applications are investigated. The system is designed in accordance with web 2.0 technologies to be an interactive and dynamic structure. With this system, the students can create digital stories via online video editors and share them under a particular topic or theme on the wall of system like YouTube or Facebook.

They can search, list and like these stories. They can rate the shared stories for peer and self-assessment. Also, they can communicate with their teachers and friends using instant messaging or chatting module. They can add comments and make discussions about these stories. This system has an easy to learn and fl exible interface in accordance with the characteristics of teachers and students. In this system, the web-based applications to make digital storytelling will provide great convenience to teachers and students. Consequently, the study provides an overview of existing literature and discusses the educational benefits of web-based digital storytelling for teachers and students. It is expected that the system introduced in this study will contribute to future research and will give a new dimension to researches in digital storytelling and educational technology.
