Abstract :

As computer and internet technologies have become an integral part of our daily lives with an ever-increasing speed in the last decade, an undergraduate student is naturally expected to be competent and comfortable with these technologies since they are raised with it. Are they really comfortable with using computer and internet technologies? Do they believe they are competent to use computer? This study examines computer self-eff icacy of pre-service teachers enrolled in various departments of the Faculty of Education of Muğla University, Turkey, in relation to diff erent variables. At the time of data collection, subjects of this study were 1st and 2nd year students who had just started to compulsory Computer Literacy course, as part of their curriculum. Two diff erent data collection tools were used in the study:

The Computer Self Eff icacy Scale (Aşkar and Umay, 2011) and a questionnaire collecting data on pre-service teachers’ personal information as well as computer ownership, computer access, computer and Internet usage habits and frequency along with their socio-economic background. This study has focused on students’ contact with computer and technology; thus, in the light of their responses to the Computer Self Eff icacy Scale, it aims to reveal any relationships between the students’ self-eff icacy beliefs and their ages, gender, area of study, computer usage, computer training, computer access, and frequency of computer use through chi-square test that is used to control non-digital variables.

Low selfeff  icacy beliefs may be an important factor in off -putting individuals’ technology and computer literacy skills. With regard to the recent initiatives as to the use of information and communication technologies in primary and secondary education in Turkey, it is crucial for teachers at any level to be comfortable with technology in order to advance their computer and technology experience with a focus on its instructional use. This study aims to reveal the computer self-eff icacy beliefs of pre-service teachers at a higher education institution in Turkey, and to examine relation of these findings to their prior computer ownership, computer access, computer and Internet usage habits and frequency as well as their subject area.
