Abstract :

Developing internet technology can be applied various areas of foreign language learning and teaching process. It can be aff ect classroom activities, context choice and assessment and evaluation of foreign language learning process. Internet technology off ers new possibilities and creates new fields to education. Educators use web based technology for supporting every section of foreign language learning classroom. Educators benefit from web technology for practice, interpretation of information, error correction and feedback. Content choice is one of the important points in a course design process. Presenting the subject matter in a specific real life context makes a contribution to the teaching and the learning process.

Foreign language teaching has broadened its contexts from classroom to the online environments where diff erent content areas are available. In foreign or second language learning classroom diff erent language learning strategies are used. These strategies dramatically aff ect the learners’ success. One of these strategies is social learning. There is a close relationship between culture, history and language. Although to know the cultural and historical  background of one country in which the target language is used is of paramount importance, the culture of the learner should also be on the agenda of the language teacher. Dramatically growing internet tools provide cultural information exchange opportunities via the websites. The aim of the study is to teach English in a cultural and historical context in an online environment.

Historical and cultural places construct the content areas of our model. It is known that meaningful and authentic context can help to increase students’ motivation and learning process. For these reason context of the study was chosen from real life environment of the students. Form and function in multiple contexts make the core of our study. In our study, for field dependent learners, we have chosen some places that have historical and cultural importance in our country. In this study, the online educational tool was introduced to 24 pre-intermediate students.

The sample lesson includes introduction and demonstration of the web tool. After demonstration lesson, participants responded to semi structured questionnaire about the web tool. The results show that using cultural and historical context not only improves students’ language learning but also improves socio-cultural knowledge about this social field. Via the web tool, it is shown that teaching English in a specific and real life context in online environment can attract students’ attention and help to improve students’ attention. Also, participants’ responses indicated that they believed that this software had a more familiar context than their current course books.
