Abstract :

The collaborative work between Pace University and the Urban Assembly is designed as an integrated plan to create a dynamic partnership between K-12 educators and college professors by partnering 6-12 teachers from The Urban Assembly and Professors from Pace University. The STEM GAP Team seeks to ultimately answer the question of what we can do to best support our potential STEM students both as they prepare for college and once they are in college. Providing students with opportunities that have meaning, resonate with the reality in their lives, stimulate their sense, provoke critical thinking skills and generate enthusiasm will encourage students to continue seeking careers in STEM areas.

Permitting teachers to have direct contact with expert faculty members will allow pertinent conversations to take place throughout the University and Secondary Schools. Ultimately, we would like to add teachers from the middle school level to join the program. According to the Common Core State Standards rationale: The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, refl ecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

The Urban Assembly is committed to preparing students to meet this mandate, by providing our teachers with an opportunity to bridge the K-12/College gap and create lasting working relationships with higher education that foster a better understanding of our students needs. “It is easiest to attract students to STEM careers when they are inspired by the best and brightest teachers, mentors, and professionals. This is especially true at the K-12 level, where researchers can play a unique role in improving STEM education by volunteering, serving as mentors to students, and by becoming STEM teachers themselves” (Press Release: House Committee on Space, Science and Technology, November 3, 2011). This statement clearly suggests that providing students with resources from the STEM industry itself is advantageous. Pace Faculty members and New York City Secondary and Middle School teachers in the “Bridging the Gap Pilot Program” begins to address the disparity and chasm between these two entities.
