Abstract :

Distinctive characteristics of today’s society mainly arise from how eff iciently and economically we can transfer, transform and use knowledge and information in various areas ranging from media, communication and education through technology. What makes this society “information society” is probably the stimulus for a continuous change through learning. Individuals of such a society do look for the ways of becoming knowledgeable and obtaining accurate information. Acquiring knowledge and getting informed to improve and change our lives is a lifelong learning process. As far as learning is concerned, educational institutions take a leading role in that process. Universities as distinguished representatives of higher education bear great responsibilities for providing quality and innovative perspectives to their individuals.

In doing this, the most recent educational technologies should be provided to save time and money. This is a major concern for both universities as hosts and providers of innovative learning and parents as receivers of the final product. The costs and benefits of distributing high quality knowledge equally and of the best quality suggest a merge of some concepts such as learning or knowledge with economic resourcefulness in regard to cost-eff ectiveness. Knowledge or information economy is good news for higher education where learning economy stands as a more operational and functional term. Along with a rapid transformation of information, universities face a variety of technical, legal, and cultural forces including fierce copyright laws prohibiting interoperability and free exchange of information. The other side of this positive development is that use of open source software, mass digitization, and the arising cyber infrastructure off er an opportunity to redefine and reshape the university.

Basic instructional instruments such as syllabi, curriculums, presentations, and course notes are essential in realising educational targets and achieving desired success. Traditional processing and application of these tools slows down eff icient and quick access to learning and teaching activities. In this regard, e-materialization of these instructional dynamics creates an accelerated and facilitated progression of educational activities. Overall, this study aims at developing an insight into past and current developments and applications regarding knowledge, information and data transformation processes in higher education in the sense of economic eff iciency, usability and productivity for achieving an innovative learning environment.

Based on the relevant literature, this analysis first of all introduces basic concepts such as knowledge, information and data. By providing elaborate definitions, the study gives an in-depth analysis of the relationship between these concepts and a knowledge-learning economy where “e-materialisation” as a process is immensely and comprehensively involved as a transformative tool. Converting knowledge and information into an innovative learning environment for universities requires a careful planning in which economic concerns are or should be of great importance. By defining possible e-materialisation channels in higher education, the study further questions possible ways and technological tools for achieving an enhanced cost-eff ective learning setting in the digital world of education.

After studying formulations and combinations regarding cost-eff ectiveness analysis of the mentioned processes, this study revises the attached importance and role of the use of cost-eff ective solutions in the realization of an e-learning model supported by an eclectic transformation process through e-materialization. Discussed in diff erent aspects, further analyses were made concerning the suggested approach for an eff ective and economical transformation and use of educational knowledge and sources. Finally, an overview of the subject was provided for further discussion that will pave the way for maintaining a cost-eff ective and eff icient learning environment for higher education.
