Abstract : To define the role of the instruction, one should know what instructional design is. Instructional design is described as “a discipline concerned with understanding and improving one aspect of education: the process of instruction” (Reigeluth, 1983, p.4). As interpreted from the definition, the ultimate goal of an instructional designer (ID) is to analyze and enhance instruction process in a rigorous way. However, in reality most of the instructional designers perform their job in an ad-hoc manner. In professional life, instructional designers may work as project managers, content providers or designers. Because of the inconclusive application in the role of an instructional designer, in this study the understandings of instructional designer candidates were analyzed. The purpose of this study is to develop an understanding about how prospective instructional designers perceive the role of the instructional designer. Research question that leads this study is “How prospective instructional designers describe and define the role of an instructional designer?” Because of the nature of the research question, qualitative methodology was used in this study. Participants of this study were 16 prospective instructional designers who were 2nd year students in department of computer education and instructional technology. Purposeful sampling was used in this study. Data was collected at the first lecture of an instructional design course. Collected data was coded and interpreted. In the definitions of the participants, three categories were emerged; aim of the IDs, responsibilities of IDs and characteristics of IDs. According to findings, they reported that the aim of instructional designers is to support education by preparing instructional material. Some of the participants also point out that an instructional designer’s aim should be integrate technology and instruction to support instructional process. Only one of the participants mentioned about providing solutions to instructional problems. On the other hand, participants stated that analysis, design, development and evaluation processes are the responsibilities of an instructional designer. Finally, being creative and expertise are the underlined characteristics for an instructional designer. Obviously, results of this study showed that prospective instructional designer’s understandings about
their future job and their role is mostly authentic. They guess that they are going to support instruction. However,
they are unclear and misunderstand parts about what their responsibilities are and how they are going to support the instruction. They also have insuff icient knowledge about what should be the major competencies of an instructional designer. Hence, the role of an instructional designer should be well-defined to prospective instructional designers to prepare them to their future job and also to graduate qualified instructional designers.
